Welcome to the Strange World of Cryptozoology!
Hi, I'm Jeff

Cryptozoology is deemed by many within the scientific and academic communities to be a field of pseudoscience. A field of study that endeavors to bring credence to the existence of rumored entities. Creatures or what some may refer to as monsters, such as Sasquatch (commonly called Big Foot), Chupacabras, as well as dismissed living things otherwise considered extinct or of fantasy are all topics within the field of Cryptozoology. These living entities are referred to as cryptids. Cryptozoology is considered to be it's own area of study, neither a part of zoology nor folkloristics.

the Flatwoods Monster

In West Virginia folklore, the Flatwoods Monster, also known as the Braxton County Monster or the Phantom of Flatwoods, is an entity reported to have been sighted in the town of Flatwoods in Braxton County, West Virginia, United States, on September 12, 1952. Stories of the creature are an example of a purported close encounter of the third kind.[1]

A Description of the Flatwoods Monster

Various descriptions of the entity exist. Most describe it as being at least 7 feet (2.1 m) tall, with a black body and a dark, glowing face. Witnesses described the creature's head as elongated, shaped like a sideways diamond, and as having non-human eyes; a large, circular cowling appeared behind the head. The creature's body was described as "inhumanly-shaped" and clad in a dark, pleated skirt-like exoskeleton, later described as a shadow.

Some accounts record that the creature appeared to have "no visible arms" due to its incredible speed, while others reported long, stringy arms, protruding from the front of its body, with long, claw-like fingers.[2][3][4][5][6] The creature is referred to as the "Lizard Monster" on the March 10, 2010, episode of MonsterQuest. Some witnesses reported seeing a large, pulsating red ball of light that hovered above or rested on the ground. Ufologists believe that it may have been a powered craft that the entity had piloted.

An Accounting of the Creature

At 7:15 p.m. on September 12, 1952, two brothers, Edward and Fred May, and their friend Tommy Hyer (ages 13, 12, and 10 respectively) witnessed a bright object cross the sky, coming to rest on land belonging to local farmer G. Bailey Fisher. Upon witnessing the object, the boys went to the home of the May brothers' mother, Kathleen May, where they told the story of having seen a UFO crash land in the hills. From there, Mrs. May, accompanied by the three boys, local children Neil Nunley (14) and Ronnie Shaver (10), and 17-year-old West Virginia National Guardsman Eugene Lemon, traveled to the Fisher farm in an effort to locate whatever it was that the boys had seen.

Lemon's dog ran ahead out of sight and suddenly began barking, and moments later ran back to the group with its tail between its legs. After traveling about 0.25 miles (402 m) the group reached the top of a hill, where they reportedly saw a large pulsating "ball of fire" about 50 feet (15 m) to their right. They also detected a pungent mist that made their eyes and noses burn. Lemon then noticed two small lights over to the left of the object, underneath a nearby oak tree and directed his flashlight towards them, revealing the creature, which May reported as bounding towards them.[5] Other sources[which?] describe it as emitting a shrill hissing noise before gliding towards them, changing direction and then heading off towards the red light. At this point the group fled in panic.

Upon returning home, Mrs. May contacted local Sheriff Robert Carr and Mr. A. Lee Stewert, co-owner of the Braxton Democrat, a local newspaper. Stewert conducted a number of interviews and returned to the site with Lemon later that night, where he reported that "there was a sickening, burnt, metallic odor still prevailing". Sheriff Carr and his deputy Burnell Long searched the area separately, but reported finding no trace of the encounter other than the smell. Early the next morning, Stewert visited the site of the encounter for a second time and discovered two elongated tracks in the mud, as well as traces of a thick black liquid. He immediately reported them as being possible signs of a saucer landing, based on the premise that the area had not been subjected to vehicle traffic for at least a year. It was later revealed that the tracks were likely to have been those of a 1942 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by local Max Lockard, who had gone to the site to look for the creature some hours prior to Stewert's discovery.[2][3][4][5][6]

After the event, Mr. William and Donna Smith, investigators associated with Civilian Saucer Investigation, LA, obtained a number of accounts from witnesses who claimed to have experienced a similar or related phenomena. These accounts included the story of a mother and her 21-year-old-daughter, who claimed to have encountered a creature with the same appearance and odor a week prior to the September 12 incident. The encounter reportedly affected the daughter so badly that she was confined to Clarksburg Hospital for three weeks. They also gathered a statement from the mother of Eugene Lemon, in which she said that, at the approximate time of the crash, her house had been violently shaken and her radio had cut out for 45 minutes, and a report from the director of the local Board of Education in which he claimed to have seen a flying saucer taking off at 6:30 a.m. on September 13 (the morning after the creature was sighted).[4]

Strange Illnesses Associated with the Creature

After encountering the creature, several members of the September 12 group reported suffering from similar symptoms, which persisted for some time and which they attributed to having been exposed to the mist emitted by the creature. The symptoms included irritation of the nose and swelling of the throat. Lemon suffered from vomiting and convulsions throughout the night, and had difficulties with his throat for several weeks afterward.[2][3] A doctor who treated several of the witnesses is reported to have described their symptoms as being similar to victims of mustard gas,[4] though such symptoms are also commonly found in sufferers of hysteria, which can be brought on by exposure to a traumatic or shocking event.[7]

In a bygone era could enormous, Kraken-like creatures have existed?
...I think it's possible!

The kraken is a mythical sea monster of colossal proportion that is said to live off the coasts of Norway & Greenland. Numerous authors over the years have speculated that the myth began from sightings of giant squids that can grow to 12–15 meters (40–50 feet) in length. The extreme size and fearsome display associated with the kraken have made it a mainstream ocean-dwelling monster in numerous fictional endeavors.

Big Foot PosterIs Sasquatch an
inter-dimensional being?

To some researchers, the lack of physical remains of Sasquatch type cryptids around the world may also be an indication of something otherworldly, and more along the lines of alien encounters. In this hypothesis it's believed there must be some sort of alternative explanation for why thousands of people witness presence of Bigfoot first hand, find tracks and DNA evidence, but haven't been able to capture an actual creature. It even suggests reasoning why photographs and video footage tend to have troubles obtaining unmistakably crystal clear images.

The theory claims human-like cryptids are cross-dimensional beings who travel from another realm or dimension to visit our world for reasons we can't quite explain. Sasquatch could be watching mankind to determine an effective means of communicating with us, or perhaps the species hasn't figured out a way to communicate with us beyond physical manifestation. Maybe what eyewitness find are distorted realities of another realm bleeding into the fabric of our own space-time continuum.

Some reports strongly indicate that we might be interacting with cross-dimensional beings, such as a hunter taking aim and firing at a Sasquatch only to see it vanish into thin air at the sound of his rifle. If indeed Bigfoot is a biological form of this planet, those are certainly the most incredible reflexes known to exist. Ultimately researchers will continue to be confronted with a heightened level of mystery until such time these profound encounters can be logically explained.

Some interesting information...
Findings about unseen portals that have been detected around Earth's magnetic field, may give some credence to the Sasquatch inter-dimensional hypothesis. You can read more about portals by following this link: https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/sunearth/news/mag-portals.html

Chupacabra signageIn Spanish, Chupacabra or chupacabras, means "goat-sucker", and is a legendary creature in the folklore within parts of the Americas, first purported sightings occured in Puerto Rico.[1] The name originates from the animal's purported habit of attacking and drinking the blood of livestock, especially goats.

Physical descriptions of the creature vary. It is purportedly a hefty creature, about the size of a large dog, a row of spines stretch from the neck to the base of a tail.

Eyewitness sightings have been claimed as early as 1995 in Puerto Rico, and have since been reported as far north as Maine, and as far south as Chile, and even being sighted outside the Americas in countries like Russia and the Philippines, with many of the reports being disregarded as uncorroborated or lacking of evidence. Sightings in northern Mexico and the southern United States have been verified as canids afflicted by mange.[2] According to wildlife management officials and biologists, the chupacabra is something of an urban legend.[3]

First Reported Attack
In March of 1995, the first reported attack happened  in Puerto Rico.[5] Eight sheep were discovered dead, each had three puncture wounds in the chest region and were completely drained of blood.[5] A few months later, in August, an eyewitness, Madelyne Tolentino, reported seeing the creature in the Puerto Rican town of Canóvanas, where as many as 150 farm animals as well as pets were reportedly killed.[5] In 1975, similar killings in the small town of Moca were attributed to El Vampiro de Moca ("The Vampire of Moca").[6] Initially, it was suspected that the killings were committed by a Satanic cult; later more killings were reported around the island, and many farms reported loss of animal life. Each animal was reported as having bled dry through a series of small circular incisions.

Puerto Rican comedian and entrepreneur Silverio Pérez is credited with coining the term chupacabras soon after the first incidents were reported in the press. Soon after the first reported events in Puerto Rico, similar animal deaths were reported in other countries, such as the Dominican Republic, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Brazil, United States, and Mexico.[5]

Appearance
The most common description of the chupacabra is that of a reptile-like creature, said to have leathery or scaly greenish-gray skin and sharp spines or quills running down its back.[13] It is said to be approximately 3 to 4 feet (0.9 to 1.2 m) high, and stands and hops in a fashion similar to that of a kangaroo.[14]

Another common description of the chupacabra is of a strange breed of wild dog.[14] This form is mostly hairless and has a pronounced spinal ridge, unusually pronounced eye sockets, fangs, and claws. Unlike conventional predators, the chupacabra is said to drain all of the animal's blood (and sometimes organs) usually through three holes in the shape of a downwards-pointing triangle or through one or two holes.[15]

The elongated skulls of Paracas in the Republic of Peru caused a stir in 2014 once a life scientist that distributed preliminary DNA testing rumored that they have mitochondrial DNA “with mutations unknown in any human, primate, or animal renowned so far”. currently a second round of DNA testing has been completed and the results are just as arguable – the skulls tested, that go back as so much as two thousand years, were shown to possess Middle Eastern and European decent. These stunning results amend the accepted history regarding the inhabitants of the Americas.
Paracas is a desert-like area within the Pisco Province on the south coast of the Republic of Peru. It's here that the Peruvian archeologist, Julio Tello, made an incredible discovery in 1928 – an enormous and elaborate burial ground containing tombs stuffed with the remains of people with the biggest elongated skulls found anyplace on Earth. These are now referred to as the ‘Paracas skulls’. In all, Tello found over three hundred of those elongated skulls, many of them are dated to go back three thousand years.

Blommér was one among the Swedish artists who in the mid 1800's wanted to create a national Swedish art, he incorporated themes from Norse mythology and folklore. In 1847 he traveled to Paris via Germany. In Germany he was inspired by the German painter Moritz von Schwind, whose images often depicted fairies and other nature spirits. In Ängsälvor, Blommér depicted fairies dancing in a meadow in the twilight.

If you're into traditional art with elves in it that even your Grandmother would approve of, may I suggest clicking here for a reproduction of 'Meadow Elves' by Nils Blommér.

"We Folk" throughout the ages in folklore, art, and storytelling has in some form mentioned "the Little People".  This reference includes Elves, gnomes, fairies, leprechauns, etc. Some recent interesting findings may possibly shed some light as to the true source of this lore.  The Atacama skeleton is a point of interest, it was founded in 2003 and is quite tiny (click here for more information). Are Pygmies another source that could have been the inspiration for the idea of Wee Folk?  Perhaps the Pygmy Peoples also known as Pygmies (click here for further details) have helped stoke the fire?  So is what I refer to as "Wee Folk" existing today? Well, yes and no. The real question may be, do Wee Folk have magical powers? I'd have to say no.  In the past or today do some of these peoples have technologies that we may consider to be magical? Maybe.  Mentioned above ^ I suggest that maybe Sasquatch is an inter-dimentional being.  The same could hold true for other mythical entities such as: Leprechauns, Elves, Jinn, Fairies, Pixies, and so forth.  When we talk about Wee Folk, typically we're talking about beings that are approximately 3 feet in stature or less.  The average height of a Pygmy is approximately 4'11".  My thoughts are that Wee Folk wouldn't be walking around in plain sight and that the most logical place they may be living would be underground, within tunnels and caverns that have been neither discovered nor explored yet!

I believe that these extra-terrestrial vehicles and their crews are visiting this planet from other planets. Most astronauts were reluctant to discuss UFOs.
Gordon Cooper, Leap of Faith

Cooper's UFO sightings

Cooper claimed to have seen his first UFO while flying over West Germany in 1951, although he denied reports he had seen a UFO during his Mercury flight.[15]

In 1957, when Cooper was 30 and a Captain, he was assigned to Fighter Section of the Experimental Flight Test Engineering Division at Edwards AFB in California. He acted as a test pilot and project manager. On May 3 of that year, he had a crew setting up an Askania Cinetheodolite precision landing system on a dry lake bed. This cinetheodolite system would take pictures at one frame per second as an aircraft landed. The crew consisted of James Bittick and Jack Gettys who began work at the site just before 08:00, using both still and motion picture cameras. According to his accounts, later that morning they returned to report to Cooper that they saw a "strange-looking, saucer-like" aircraft that did not make a sound either on landing or take-off.

According to his accounts, Cooper realized that these men, who on a regular basis have seen experimental aircraft flying and landing around them as part of their job of filming those aircraft, were clearly worked up and unnerved. They explained how the saucer hovered over them, landed 50 yards away from them using three extended landing gears and then took off as they approached for a closer look. They took photographs and film. There was a special Pentagon number to call to report such incidents: called and soon was reported up the chain of command until he was instructed by a general to have the film developed, but to make no prints of it, and send it right away in a locked courier pouch. As he had not been instructed to not look at the negatives before sending them, he did. He said the quality of the photography was excellent as would be expected from the experienced photographers who took them. What he saw was exactly what they had described to him. He did not see the film before everything was sent away. He expected that there would be a follow up investigation since an aircraft of unknown origin had landed in a highly classified military installation, but nothing was ever said of the incident again. He was never able to track down what happened to those photos. He assumed that they ended up going to the Air Force's official UFO investigation, Project Blue Book, which was based at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

He held claim until his death that the U.S. government was indeed covering up information about UFOs. He gave the example of President Harry Truman who he claimed said on April 4, 1950, "I can assure you that flying saucers, given that they exist, are not constructed by any power on Earth." He also pointed out that there were hundreds of reports made by his fellow pilots, many coming from military jet pilots sent to respond to radar or visual sightings from the ground.[16] In his memoirs, Cooper wrote he had seen other unexplained aircraft several times during his career, and also said hundreds of similar reports had been made. He further claimed these sightings had been "swept under the rug" by the U.S. government.[6] Throughout his later life Cooper expressed repeatedly in interviews he had seen UFOs and described his recollections for the documentary Out of the Blue.[6]
